You better laugh your PS3 will be watching

Sony seems to be doing its share of research and development with this patent filed for an emotion detecting controller interface.

While the patent focuses on laughter it can identify other emotions such as sadness, excitement, anger, joy, interest, and boredom. For example, boredom may be detected if a user is “looking away from the presentation, yawning, or talking over the presentation.”

I can see this type of emotion tracking move into other Sony products outside of the PS3 sphere.

Joystiq has a post today about a new patent filed for a saddle type game controller add-on. The fun of horse riding without the smell? Makes me wonder how games like Zelda and Oblivion would play if you were forced to climb onto your horse controller to make a fast get away. The patent sheds a little more light on how it would work...

A Nunchuk (or another Wii Remote) is used as the reins of the beast, and the Wii Remote in the pocket detects the player's movement on the seat, which can be used either for balance or, in one example, to indicate the gait of the horse: "gentle forward/backward motion = walking, fast forward/backward rocking motion = gallop."
